World No 1 Dustin Johnson suffers an unfortunate start to The Players Championship as his approach hits the flag and rolls back off the green

Dustin Johnson suffered an unfortunate break on the opening hole of The Players Championship as a near-perfect wedge hit the pin and led to a bogey.

Johnson, now fully fit following the freak back injury he sustained when he slipped on a staircase on the eve of the Masters, looked set to make an opening birdie at TPC Sawgrass when he split the fairway from the tee and sent his wedge approach straight at the flag.

But it turned out to be too straight, and his ball cannoned off the flagstick before rolling down the slope and off the front of the green, leaving the world No 1 unable to hide his frustration.

Johnson opted to putt from the fringe and left it six foot short, and the par putt failed to drop as he and playing partner Rory McIlroy, the top two players in the world rankings, both started with a bogey.
