Charl Schwartzel takes a big risk with a horrible plugged lie in a bunker during the second round of the Valspar Championship

Charl Schwartzel's eventful week at the Valspar Championship continued as he faced a horrific plugged lie in a bunker midway through his second round.

Schwartzel was forced to curtail his pro-am after 10 holes after his partner's ball cannoned off a tree and hit the South African on the left wrist, and he dished out some pain in the first round when an errant drive struck a young spectator on the leg.

The defending champion went on to card a 70, and he was one under for the day on Friday before pulling his tee-shot at the ninth into a fairway bunker.

He arrived to find his ball in an impossible lie, plugged in the sand and right up against the lip of the trap, and most expected him to take a penalty drop for an unplayable lie.

But, fearing his ball would plug again with a drop, Schwartzel opted to take a lash with his wedge to get into a position where he could at least go at the green with his third.

Schwartzel risked aggravating his hand injury with the dangerous escape attempt, but he pulled it off. However, as Wayne Riley observed, he had to add a yard onto his distance to the pin!
