Charles Schwartzel hits a spectator with a wayward tee shot and hands over a glove as an apology

Watching golf is rarely a painful experience, but try telling that to the young fan who took an unfortunate hit from a stray ball at the Valspar Championship.

It was ironic that it was defending champion Charl Schwartzel who dealt the painful blow, a day after he cut short his pro-am after his playing partner's ball cannoned off a tree and hit the South African on the left wrist.

Schwartzel showed no signs of discomfort early in his round, but he was soon shaken after carving his drive right of the fairway at the long 14th, and his shout of "fore" came too late for the schoolboy.

His knee took the full force of the impact, although he did prevent Schwartzel's ball from ending up in the trees with his intervention.

Fortunately, the youngster escaped any serious injury and welcomed Schwartzel's sincere apologies, and at least he walked away with a signed glove from the former Masters champion.
