Dale Steyn is rated 50/50 to return for South Africa in the third Test with England in Johannesburg, but Vernon Philander will not figure for the rest of the series.

Steyn missed the drawn second Test in Cape Town after suffering a shoulder injury when the Proteas were thrashed by 241 runs in the series opener in Durban.

His return for the pivotal third game remains up in the air, and there was mixed news on South Africa's other injured fast bowlers.

Philander injured his ankle while playing football during the tour of India in November and South Africa team manager Mohammed Moosajee confirmed on Wednesday he would play no part in the remaining two Tests.

But Kyle Abbott, who missed the Newlands match with a hamstring problem, will be fit to return when the series continues at the Wanderers next Thursday.

Moosajee said: "Vernon Philander is a no-go for the Test series. He is still very much in his rehab phase.

"Kyle Abbott has made a full recovery from his hamstring strain and he will be ready for the Johannesburg Test.

"Dale Steyn is pretty much 50/50. He has got another appointment with a shoulder specialist in Cape Town tomorrow [Thursday] for another opinion and will be reassessed when we regroup in Johannesburg on Monday."
