Michael Holding's 14-149 (1976)

17 Aug 1976: England v West Indies, fifth test match, final day at the Oval. Michael Holding takes the wicket, his fourteenth of the match, of Alan Knott.

On a desperately flat deck - one which saw teammate Viv Richards smash a Test-best 291 - during the blisteringly hot summer of 1976, Holding somehow contrived to take 14 wickets to skittle England out twice.

Devon Malcolm's 9-54 (1994)

Malcolm produced a fearsome spell of fast bowling to rival that of Holding's in the 1994 Test against South Africa, where his 9-54 in the second innings helped England on their way to a series-leveling victory.

Phil Tufnell takes 7-66 (1997)

Phil Tufnell, 1997 Ashes at The Oval

In a low-scoring sixth Test to end the 1997 Ashes, it was Tufnell, not Shane Warne, to dazzle with spin bowling of the highest order, taking 7-66 in the first innings before picking up a further four in the second to earn England a thrilling 19-run consolation win.

Murali destroys England (1998)

In a one-off Test to end the 1998 summer, Muttiah Muralitharan took a staggering 16 wickets in a memorable victory over England, including 9-65 in the second innings.

Steve Waugh's 157 not out (2001)

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM: Australian batsman Steve Waugh acknowledges the applause after diving for a quick single to bring up his century against England o

There are few more iconic images in the game than that of Australian skipper Steve Waugh - barely able to walk, let alone run, due to a calf injury - having desperately dived for his ground to reach his hundred, lift his face from the dirt and give a most sheepish wave of his bat in acknowledgement of the applause of The Oval crowd.

Shane Warne's 400th Test wicket (2001)

In that same Test, Warne took his 400th of his 708 Test wickets - his victim, one of Surrey's own, Alec Stewart.

Kevin Pietersen's first Test ton (2005)

Never one to shy away from the spotlight; what a time for KP to pick to score his maiden Test century, on the final day of a thrilling 2005 Ashes series - his 158 earning England a series-clinching draw. Speaking of...

England regain the Ashes (2005)

That Pietersen century saw England win the series 2-1, with England regaining the Ashes for the first time since their 1986/87 tour of Australia.

Flintoff runs out Ponting (2009)

England's Andrew Flintoff celebrates running out Australia's Captain Ricky Ponting (not pictured) with England's James Anderson(L) during the Australian 2n

Four years on, and struggling with injuries as his career wound to a close, Freddie Flintoff wasn't quite the cricketing juggernaut of 2005, but he still produced the odd iconic moment, most notably the run out of Ricky Ponting on the final day at The Oval as England once again brought the Ashes home.

Hashim Amla's 300 (2012)

When Amla batted, and batted, and batted... In a comprehensive innings victory, Amla amassed 311 off 529 balls against an England attack with no answers. You sense he will be relishing the prospect of revisiting the ground later this week.
