Frankie Gavin cleared to face Sam Eggington after failing to make welterweight limit

Frankie Gavin v Sam Eggington

Frankie Gavin's weight problems will not prevent his Birmingham battle with Sam Eggington on Saturday night, live on Sky Sports.

Gavin failed to make the 10st 7lbs limit for his welterweight fight with Eggington, but the bill-topping bout will still go ahead at the Barclaycard Arena.

Gavin had to strip naked as he tipped the scales at 10st 9lbs 4oz but Eggington was easily inside the required mark at 10st 6lbs 5oz and he alone can win the WBC international title.

Just hours beforehand, Gavin had claimed on social media that he could have made the limit but was warned against losing six pounds by the British Boxing Board of Control.

"Just to let everyone know, I would have made weight no problem," he posted on his official Facebook page.

"But the Board wouldn't let me lose 6lbs in 28 hours, [when] a lot of fighters lose more," he continued. "But it is what it is. The fight will still happen."

The 31-year-old southpaw is reported to have been too heavy at two check-weights and was instructed by the board not to risk his health by shedding too many pounds.

Gavin also tweeted his thoughts after the weigh-in, insisting he was happy with preparations ahead of the crucial local derby.

He wrote: "I'm just concentrating on the fight now and winning.. the work's done, training's gone great.. read into this what you want. I'm ready."

There were no such issues for the undercard bouts, although middleweights Anthony Ogogo and Craig Cunningham had the longest staredown of the day before an official stepped in to separate them with a simple piece of paper.

Home fighter Cunningham came in at 11st 5lbs 8oz, while the London Olympics bronze medallist shaped up five ounces lighter at 11st 5lbs 3oz.

Sean Davis was the lighter of the two super-bantamweight fighters on show, tipping the scales at just 8st 9lbs with late call-up Paul Economides weighing 8st 9lbs 11oz.
