Chris 'English' Eubank to take 'small step back' in Chris Eubank Jr's training

Chris 'English' Eubank was uncharacteristically lost for words when trying to explain the potential of his son, Chris Eubank Jr.

Live Fight Night

WBA interim middleweight champion Eubank Jr (19-1-KO14) makes his Sky Sports debut against Tony Jeter on Saturday and his father - a former world champion - believes new trainer Adam Booth can help his son prove himself 'elite.'

Eubank Jr told Sky Sports: "I'm talking about what makes a man elite. It's innate and you can't put your finger on it, but I recognise it and Junior has that. I speak for what I believe and am strong in my conviction that he's able to do these things. I've been watching it all these years and I'm so frustrated the public haven't seen what I've seen.

In the gymnasium, it's a real fight when sparring takes place, only there's no decision at the end of it. I see him performing and I see... there are no words.

"In the gymnasium, it's a real fight when sparring takes place - only there's no decision at the end of it. I see him performing and I see... there are no words. I would just like to see him produce that under the very hot lights. Adam Booth will help us do just that, so I step back just a little.

"It's a little bit odd [taking a back seat] but it's great. It's fantastic. I'm reminded by the people who say I should step back but why would I do that? A parent is actually an extension of a trainer. It's my duty to advise and protect and to steer.

"There are people out there looking and saying: 'maybe I can help' but it's OK - I can do that. We've now instructed Adam Booth and he's the head trainer. You will not see me getting involved in Junior's training now.

"The idea is to let Adam use his skills. There's a term 'whisperer' and they usually use it around horses. Junior is ferocious as Adam said, and we need to somehow tame it and round it off with a little bit of grace, suave and majesty.

"If we can do that, it will be more pleasing for the fans and we are here to entertain. That is what we do.

"It's all about teasing it out of him to win at a higher level. I believe. I have a wealth of experience and have witnessed so many unfortunate circumstances where fighters go off track and don't realise their ability, and I'm trying to steer him away from that.

"I believe stepping back and letting Adam do his work is a formula that will reap benefits. It's not about me being humble because it hasn't been proven to the public at a high level, but I know fighters."

Booth added: "It's been a few weeks working with Junior, Ronnie [Davis] and English. It's important in a coaching situation that you don't steam in and say 'this is how it should be done' because Eubank Jr - Chris - can fight. Ferociously.

"He can fight a good world champion. If you put him in the pit and let him go, he's going to win. My job is to try and help with some refining elements. It's about Chris expressing himself and showing what he wants to do. He's extremely ferocious so sit back and enjoy."

'English' has previously claimed his son is the man to dethrone WBA Super, IBF and WBC interim champion Gennady Golovkin (34-0-KO31) - claims that have since been rubbished by the likes of British champion Nick Blackwell and Eubank Jr's only conqueror, Billy Joe Saunders.
