Orton wins title with help from his friends

Much has changed since Backlash was last staged - Batista, Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase were on the roster for a start. The trio competed in the night's WWE Title tag-team match, Batista partnering Shane McMahon and then-champion Triple H, and Rhodes and DiBiase banding with Randy Orton. The rules stipulated that Orton would become champion if any member of his team secured a pinfall or if anyone in The Game's team got disqualified, but it was The Viper who secured the three-count.

Orton chose not to get overly physical in the early part of the match-up, scarpering to the back after being chased by Triple H, but he returned to the ring with Rhodes and DiBiase finding it tough to contain their three opponents. Triple H survived an RKO - delivered by Orton after The Cerebral Assassin had talked Batista out of using a steel chair - but was finally downed with a punt to the temple and carried out of the superbly-named Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island on a stretcher.

Brotherly warfare

The early months of 2009 were memorable for the rivalry between daredevil brothers Jeff and Matt Hardy. The siblings had shared seven tag-team championship reigns together but became bitter enemies once Matt, angry at losing an ECW Championship match to Jack Swagger and jealous of "sharing the spotlight" with Jeff, cracked his brother with a steel chair at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view, a dastardly act which allowed Edge (more on him later) to pin Jeff and win the WWE Title.

Having also admitted to carrying out previous heinous attacks on Jeff, including chucking him down a stairwell, Matt squared off with his brother at WrestleMania and on Smackdown, winning on both occasions. Jeff gained revenge at Backlash, however, breaking Matt's hand, taping his arms and legs, strapping him onto a table and forcing him to utter the words "I Quit" as he threatened to perform a dive from the top of a ladder. Match won, Jeff thundered Matt through the table anyway!

Cutting Edge

I told you I'd return to Edge. The Canadian left Backlash as World Heavyweight Champion after knocking off John Cena in a raucous Last Man Standing Match, albeit with a huge helping hand from the Big Show. The Rated-R Superstar and Cena could only put each other down for numerous nine counts but Cena was unable to get up by 10 - and for some time afterwards - after he was hurled into one of the arena's spotlights by Show. Glass and sparks flew everywhere as Edge became a nine-time champ.

QUIZ: WWE Backlash

Test your knowledge of past Backlash events

The win continued a frantic few months of title wins and losses for Edge, with the No Way Out pay-per-view in February particularly topsy-turvy. Having shipped the belt he won from Hardy at the Royal Rumble inside the Smackdown Elimination Chamber, he jumped Kofi Kingston prior to the Raw one, taking the Ghanaian's place in the match and going on to win the World Heavyweight Championship by pinning fan favourite Rey Mysterio following a spear.

Captain Charisma strikes gold

Edge's long-time pal - and occasional enemy - Christian also departed Rhode Island gilded, having defeated Swagger to become ECW Champion. The Canadian, who had only returned to WWE following a four-year absence in February, was the much smaller man but outfoxed Swagger before connecting with a Killswitch to nab his first world title in WWE. He would go on to achieve three more before retiring from the ring.

One of those was a second reign with the ECW Championship, while the other two were with the World Heavyweight Championship on Smackdown. Christian's initial spell as blue brand kingpin lasted less than a week, with the Ontario native pinned by Orton on Smackdown having claimed the belt by beating Alberto Del Rio at Extreme Rules in 2011. His second stint, at 28 days, was a tad longer - he downed Orton via DQ before losing to him via pinfall in a No Holds Barred bout.

Steamboat rolls back the years

Ricky Steamboat enjoyed a stellar wrestling career in the seventies, eighties and nineties, picking up the Intercontinental Championship and battling Ric Flair in some tremendous matches along the way. Yet the man nicknamed The Dragon showed he had barely lost a step when he stepped back into the ring in the early part of 2009 against Chris Jericho, firstly alongside fellow legends Roddy Piper and Jimmy Snuka at WrestleMania and then in singles action against Y2J at Backlash.

Steamboat had impressed while competing on behalf of Hollywood actor Mickey Rourke at 'Mania, forcing Jericho to work hard for his win, and subsequently chose to accept the Canadian's offer of a one-on-one dust-up, his first since 1994. Out came The Dragon's signature arm drags and chops but any chance of an upset win was dashed when Jericho countered a diving crossbody with a Codebreaker and locked in the Walls of Jericho. Y2J victorious, Steamboat given a standing ovation.

Who will earn the crowd's respect at this year's WWE Backlash? Find out by watching the show at 1am on Sunday night on Sky Sports Box Office (channel 491) and Sky Sports HD Box Office (channel 492).
