Ahead of Saturday's crunch Rugby World Cup clash, we take a look at the last five meetings between England and Australia...

June 2010: Australia 20-21 England

This game was the second in a two-match series, with Australia winning the first one 27-17 in Perth through two tries from Quade Cooper and one from Rocky Elsom.

England's scrum had dominated the first game, earning them two penalty tries from referee Nigel Owens, but they were not able to cross the whitewash themselves.

That all changed in the second game, with Ben Youngs and Chris Ashton both dotting down as England held out for a slender away win over the Wallabies.

Australia came into this game on a high. They'd finished second in the Tri-Nations after a rampant, unbeaten tournament from Graham Henry's New Zealand, but the Wallabies had managed to record a 26-24 win over the All Blacks in Hong Kong later in the year.

Chris Ashton scored both of England's tries, with the second one revered as one of the great Twickenham scores.

England turned the ball over on their own line before Ben Youngs fed Courtney Lawes, who drew and passed to Ashton on the right.

Ashton had just Drew Mitchell in front of him, and he stepped the Wallaby to race in for a 90m effort in front of a delirious Twickenham crowd.

England came into this game after a solid but unsuccessful Six Nations. The tournament was decided by a 75th-minute try from Shane Williams that handed Wales the win over England, the trophy and the Grand Slam for 2012.

England, and the newly-appointed Stuart Lancaster, then headed for South Africa to take on the Springboks in a three-match tour and lost the series 2-0 after drawing the final Test.

They returned to winning ways with a 54-12 success over Fiji in the first game of the autumn internationals, but they were unable to build on that against the Wallabies as Berrick Barnes kicked the visitors to victory after Nick Cummins crossed for a first-half try.

England lost to South Africa a week later, but the following weekend produced one of their most clinical performances under Lancaster, recording a 38-21 win over the All Blacks.

A match that could have been remembered for the debut of a certain Joel Tomkins in the midfield, it was instead remembered for a try from 21-year-old fly-half Owen Farrell.

Farrell traded penalties with opposite number Quade Cooper before a score from Matt Toomua gave the Wallabies a 13-6 lead at half-time.

The two sides were then locked at 13-13 after captain Chris Robshaw crossed in the 50th minute, before Farrell gave his side the lead with the third quarter drawing to a close.

Neither side was able to score in the final quarter as England held out for a much-needed win at home.

Tours don't come much tougher than three Tests against the All Blacks, and that's what England faced in June 2014.

They were 'blackwashed' in the series and hosted the self-same New Zealanders in the first of their autumn internationals.

The game was close but England ultimately succumbed to their fourth defeat of the year to the No 1 side in the world before losing to a Springbok outfit inspired by tries from Jan Serfontein, Cobus Reinach and Schalk Burger.

The next week, their autumn internationals facing a dark start, England negotiated a 28-9 defeat of Samoa before producing a strong performance to defeat the Wallabies.

The two wins were the start of an unbeaten run at Twickenham which only ended when England fell to Wales in the World Cup last week.
