Catalans 20-12 Warrington: Grand Final runners-up beaten

Highlights of the Betfred Super League match between Catalans Dragons and Warrington Wolves

Warrington's defence of their Super League Leaders' Shield began with defeat as they went down 20-12 at Catalans Dragons.

The 2016 Grand Final runners-up were undone, in part, by one of their old boys as Richie Myler scored one of the home side's three tries, while Tom Lineham's sin-binning was also a contributing factor.

Greg Bird marked his return to the Dragons with another of their scores, while the third was run in by debutant Brayden Wiliame.

An injury list featuring the likes of Stefan Ratchford, Ben Westwood, Chris Hill and Kevin Brown was a mitigating factor in the result, but the night had actually begun well for Warrington as Joe Westerman and Kurt Gidley combined to give Savelio a debut try.

Declan Patton added the extras, but it was 6-6 by the break after Rhys Evans' misplaced pass under pressure gave Myler a 15-yard dash to the line.

Lineham's professional foul shortly after the restart reduced the Wolves to 12 men temporarily, and they were punished as Bird finished off Paul Aiton's good work.

Luke Walsh's second successful conversion was then followed by a penalty as Catalans opened a 14-6 lead before Evans' converted try reduced the deficit to two points.

A handling error from Jack Hughes near his own line effectively ended Warrington's hopes of snatching a late win, though, and Williame went over at the death to seal their fate.
