A building in Atlanta featuring a mural of Colin Kaepernick has been demolished in the build-up to the Super Bowl.
The portrait was created by contemporary muralist Fabian Williams - who also goes by the name Occasional Superstar - and had adorned the side of the abandoned building for almost two years.
It remains unclear why the building - which is close to Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium - was flattened now and who ordered the demolition.
Kaepernick is a divisive figure in the USA after he began kneeling during the US national anthem before NFL games to draw attention to racial inequality and police brutality.
Williams posted a video of the remains of the demolished building - which also featured a painting he did of Muhammad Ali as the character T'challa from the movie Black Panther - on his Instagram account on Friday.
"What did he kneel for? Inequality. Human rights. That's the symbol that they just demolished during their celebration," he wrote. "Timing is important and it's a message."
Meanwhile, Grammy-nominated rapper Cardi B said she received an offer to perform at the Super Bowl, but struggled with the decision to turn down the lucrative opportunity in support of Kaepernick.
She revealed it was a hard decision since her husband, rapper Offset, loves to watch football, but she felt obligated to "stand behind" Kaepernick because he "stood up" for minorities.
"My husband, he loves football. His kids play football. It's really hard for him. He really wants to go to the Super Bowl, but he can't go to the Super Bowl, because he's got to stand for something," she said.
Maroon 5 will be joined by Big Boi of Outkast and rapper Travis Scott for this year's Super Bowl half-time show, while Gladys Knight will sing the national anthem.
