New York Jets have continued their preparations for a total rebuild with Eric Decker and David Harris the latest men to leave the franchise.

After a hugely disappointing 5-11 season, the Jets have purged their roster during the off-season and wide receiver Decker and veteran linebacker Harris join a host of names in departing either via trade, free agency or being cut.

Brandon Marshall and Geno Smith stay at MetLife Stadium having joined the Giants, Ryan Fitzpatrick has joined Tampa Bay as back-up to Jameis Winston while Nick Mangold and Darrelle Revis are without a team having already moved on.

The theory is that after one winning season in the last six and a string of problems at quarterback, general manager Mike Maccagnan is clearing the decks to start again but head coach Todd Bowles now finds himself with a wafer-thin squad at his disposal.

The exits of veterans Decker and Harris will save in excess of $10m and is the clearest indication of the Jets' plans. The pair were a key part of the team that went 10-6 in 2015 and missed out on the play-offs in the final week of the season.

While some other names to depart have had their issues, on and off the field, the same cannot be said of Decker and Harris who have 13 years of Jets service between them.

Decker is coming off having an injured shoulder in 2016 that saw him placed on injured reserve in October but he had 163 for 2,182 yards and 19 touchdowns in three seasons while Harris, a second-round pick in 2007, has missed just one game in the last eight years.

Decker's departure is likely to follow suit with teams unlikely to trade for a 30-year-old who spent most of last season on IR and Maccagnan's admission that he would be cut if he couldn't be traded.
