The New York Jets have traded their former first-round pick at safety, Calvin Pryor, to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for linebacker Demario Davis.

Pryor was selected by the Jets with the No 18 pick in the 2014 draft to become a cornerstone of their defence but the 24-year-old has failed to live up to expectations in New York.

He made 38 starts for the Jets over three seasons, recording 184 tackles and two interceptions, but when the team picked two safeties, Jamaal Adams and Marcus Maye, in the first and second rounds of the 2017 draft, Pryor became a natural trade candidate.

Davis spent four seasons with the Jets before signing a two-year, $8m contract with Cleveland as an unrestricted free agent before the 2016 season. He made 15 starts and the 28-year-old finished second on the team with 99 tackles and two sacks last season.

Davis was drafted by the Jets in the third round in 2012. He made 51 starts with the Jets before leaving.

Cleveland's vice president of football operations Sashi Brown sees Pryor as a player with potential.

"Calvin is a young-experienced safety that has upside," said Brown. "We are pleased to be able to add him to our defensive back room and just like every player we acquire, we expect him to come in with a hard-working mindset ready to compete.

More from 2017 Nfl Off Season

"Demario is a guy that we developed the utmost respect for in his time with our team, not only as a professional but also as a person. We appreciate all he did for our organisation in his time in Cleveland."
