The Minnesota Vikings have acquired quarterback Sam Bradford from the Philadelphia Eagles for a first-round draft pick in 2017 and a fourth-round pick in 2018.

The Vikings were in the market for a new starter after losing Teddy Bridgewater to a horrific knee injury during a practice session earlier this week.

Bridgewater will miss the entire 2016-17 season and could even miss time the following year after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament and a dislocated kneecap among other injuries.

Bradford was selected with the first pick of the 2010 NFL Draft but has never really lived up to the lofty expectations placed on him when he came into the professional game out of Oklahoma.

He asked for a trade earlier this year, with the Eagles drafting Carson Wentz to be their quarterback of the future despite having given him a two-year $36m extension as recently as March.

Bradford had four inconsistent seasons running the St Louis Rams offence and, after missing the 2014 season, was traded to the Eagles, who he made 14 starts and threw 19 touchdowns for.

The trade means Philadelphia will most likely open the season with Chase Daniel as their starter with Wentz having missed much of preseason with a rib injury.
