Tommy Fleetwood targets defence of Open de France title

Tommy Fleetwood discusses the state of his game ahead of his title defence at the Open de France.

Tommy Fleetwood is eager to defend his Open de France title at Le Golf National this week.

The Englishman, who came second at the US Open, claimed victory in Paris last year and will hope to impress again at the course that will host the 2018 Ryder Cup.

"I think this event last year came at a point where I was pretty much in the form of my life," said Fleetwood. "I'd had some great finishes and obviously I'd had a great year - I won at the start of the year.

"But winning the French Open, it doesn't matter what year it's in or where it's at, it's one of the biggest events we play on tour, so to win one of them was massive, and just the way I did it.

"I was up there all week and then on Sunday I kind of led the whole way and felt very confident. It put me top of the Race to Dubai again so it was a pretty big week.

"It's nice to come back and have such good memories and you can look back at great rounds that you had and finished with a win."

Fleetwood is currently in contention to make Thomas Bjorn's European Team for the Ryder Cup, and he believes Le Golf National will produce a fantastic occasion in September, particularly with the finish.

"I struggle to think of a better finish that you could have," he said. "I mean you've got 24 of the best players in the world playing it, and I think it will probably show.

"It is what you practice for, to play some of the toughest holes in golf in the biggest sporting event in the world - something I'd like to do. I'd probably like the matches to be over before it but I would still relish the challenge of playing them."
