Matthew Southgate did well just to find his ball in the thick bracken during the third round of the Irish Open, but what he did next was scarcely believable.
Southgate was in deep trouble after missing the green with his approach to the 11th at Portstewart and, even though he managed to locate his ball, he appeared certain to have to take a penalty drop for an unplayable lie.
The Englishman crafted a stance and attempted a couple of practice swings, but even taking the club back was a problem as there was too much foliage interfering with the club-head.
However, Southgate persevered and somehow managed to lay club on ball, which squirted out of the bushes, across a path and down onto the green, and it came within a whisker of hitting the pin and dropping for what would have been the chip-in of the season.
Just getting his ball onto the green was a huge achievement, let alone gouging it to within 10 feet of the cup, but he was unable to take full advantage as he missed the putt for par and went on to card a 71 which left him five shots off the lead.
