Lee Westwood and Paul Dunne both bruised the flagstick on the eighth hole with arrow-straight approaches on day one of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open.
Both had around 140 yards to the pin on the tricky par-four at Portstewart, with Westwood in the middle of the fairway while Dunne's drive leaked into the first cut of rough on the right.
Westwood went first and struck a pure short-iron which appeared to actually pitch in the hole, only to bounce back out and roll about 10 feet away to leave a good chance for birdie.
And, just moments later, Dunne clipped a delightful second towards the target which bounced just short of the pin and also hit the flagstick, although the Irishman's ball came to rest within a couple of feet of the hole.
After the third member of the group, Tyrrell Hatton, his a "terrible" approach to eight feet, Westwood calmly rolled in his birdie putt and Dunne tapped in for his three as both players celebrated back-to-back birdies, and Dunne went on to add a third in a row at the ninth.
Dunne gave his home fans plenty to cheer as he posted a flawless five-under 67, but Westwood triple-bogeyed the 14th and doubled the 16th as he struggled home in 40 to finish on four over par.
