Justin Thomas sends the crowd in Mexico ducking for cover after letting go of his driver following a bad drive on the final day of the WGC

The crowd following Sunday's final group at the WGC-Mexico Championship had a fortunate escape when Justin Thomas let go of his driver on his follow-through.

Thomas, who enjoyed a spectacular hole-in-one as he surged into the lead on day three at Chapultepec Golf Club, found the going more difficult in the final round playing alongside world No 1 Dustin Johnson and four-time major winner Rory McIlroy.

The young American was three over for the day after an erratic outward 38, and his frustration boiled over on the tee at the par-five 11th.

There was more than a hint of anger in his swing as he gave it the full treatment, but control was lacking as his ball veered left towards a hospitality area.

But it wasn't just the fans enjoying some refreshment who were in danger of being hit. Thomas let go of his driver in exasperation and sent it spiralling towards the spectators to the left of the tee, but he caught a huge break as the flying club dropped just short of the rope.
