The 22-year-old recovered from letting a five-shot advantage slip away to post four birdies in a five-hole stretch along the back nine and finish two clear of compatriot Christiaan Bezuidenhout.

"It's too good to be true. I'm overcome with emotions at the moment," Stone said. "There was a lot of ups and downs in that final round but to come out on top at the end is incredible."

After three days of play being disrupted by thunderstorms, Stone added three birdies early on Sunday morning to complete a third-round 65 and give him a two-stroke lead over Daniel Brooks.

Gains at the second and fourth extended the South African's lead to five, before a hat-trick of bogeys from the fifth and a missed three-foot par-save at the ninth saw his advantage disappear.

A three-putt blemish at the 10th and a wayward tee-shot at the next briefly moved Brooks two clear, only for the Englishman to post a three-putt of his own from long range.

Stone stopped the rot with back-to-back birdies from the 12th to make a three-way tie for the lead alongside Brooks and Bezuidenhout, who posted three gains in a row around the turn, before taking the outright advantage with a two putt at the 15th.

Bezuidenhout briefly cut the lead back to one by picking up a stroke at the 13th, only for Stone to reclaim his two-shot cushion by birdieing the 16th and saving par from six feet at the next.

A par at the last closed a one-under 71 for Stone, with Brooks making a three-putt bogey from the fringe at the last to miss out on a tie for second.

"Everything was great this week," Bezuidenhout said. "This Open is every South African's dream to win and I've come close this year, so hopefully next year I'll have another chance."

Top seed Branden Grace and former major champion Retief Goosen ended the week in a four-way tie for fourth, while a round-of-the-day 65 from Daniel Im left the American a further stroke off the pace.
