Andrew "Beef" Johnston buoyed by BMW PGA home support

Andrew Johnston had two eagles on his card as he stayed in firm contention on day three of the BMW PGA Championship

Andrew "Beef" Johnston is embracing being back playing in front of British supporters after keeping himself in contention at the BMW PGA Championship.

The Englishman posted a level-par 72 in tricky conditions at Wentworth on Saturday to get inside the top 10 and move within five strokes of leader Andrew Dodt.

Johnston bounced back from a blemish at the third with a chip-in eagle at the next and posted another eagle at the par-five 12th, only to bogey two of his final six holes.

The fans' favourite had a disappointing 2017 after his breakthrough year and has fallen out of the world's top 100, although that didn't stop large crowds following him through his third round.

"I really kind of bounce off it," Johnston said about the crowds, which are set to break attendance records for this event. "Always want make the putt and hit a good shot in and get the crowd going.

"I just walk around with a big smile on my face because I never dreamt of sort of being in this position and having that kind of support.

"I need to go out (on Sunday) and play well and just go and put a good score on the board. I know I can play well around here, so I just try and do my thing."

Johnston sits in the group on three under, with compatriot Lee Westwood the pick of the English interest and three off the lead after finishing his level-par 72 with three consecutive birdies.

"When things aren't going your way you have to find another way of getting it around the golf course and I did," Westwood said. "My short game's been really sharp, and it needed to be today.

"I was very patient out there today. I didn't play my best golf, and I didn't hit it very well tee-to-green. But I hit a few fairways and greens on the last few holes. It was great to finish like that and get back to level par."
