Justin Rose feels progress being made with his game at Wentworth

Justin Rose of England plays his second shot on the 9th hole during day three of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth

Ryder Cup teammates Justin Rose and Chris Wood experienced mixed fortunes as they attempted a move up the leaderboard during the third round of the BMW PGA Championship.

The Olympic gold medallist was keen to take the positives from a two-under 70 as one of the morning starters at Wentworth, while playing partner Wood criticised the state of his putting after stuttering to a one-over 73.

Rose, who only made the weekend after a final-hole eagle on Friday, mixed four birdies with two bogeys in breezy conditions to get back to level par for the week.

"It's a tough day out there so I'm pretty happy with the score," Rose said. "It's the kind of day I'd have loved to have shot 67, which I felt would put me in contention going into tomorrow, or given me an outside chance.

"I'm a few shy of maybe what I needed but a good round of golf nonetheless. I'm struggling a little bit with my feels and my game so on a breezy, tricky day it was a good score.

Wood came in to the weekend nine strokes off the pace, one shot more than he overturned to win last year, but failed to make the fast start required to move back in to serious contention.

The Bristolian spent time working on his putting ahead of his title defence, only to see his struggles with the flat stick continue on Wentworth's revamped greens.

After posting birdies either side of a double-bogey at the eighth, Wood responded to bogeys at the 10th and 15th with a final-hole gain but missed a number of opportunities during his round..

"I played lovely here on Thursday and couldn't buy a putt, I played average yesterday and couldn't buy a putt and then played average again today and couldn't buy a putt," Wood said.

"It's been a frustrating week because I've been no good on the greens. I holed quite a few putts here last year but I just can't see the lines this week.

"The irony is that I spent so much time on the putting green at my home club last week. I drove up to see Phil [Kenyon] in Liverpool but I've struggled this week and I don't really know what to put it down to."
