Former Rangers player and manager Graeme Souness explains why the Old Firm derby against Celtic is the most intense fixture in world football

Graeme Souness believes Celtic are big favourites to beat Rangers when the Old Firm meet in the Scottish Cup semi-final on Sunday.

This weekend brings the second meeting of the Glasgow rivals since Rangers were readmitted to Scottish football in the Third Division four years ago.

Last year's League Cup semi-final ended in a 2-0 Celtic win and although Souness expects Rangers to put in an improved performance at Hampden, he says Celtic's top-flight experience should see the Hoops through.

"Celtic start as the big favourites. They play in the bigger league against better players every week," he told Sky Sports News HQ.

Celtic should win , but it's a derby game, it's a cup game and Rangers have a big chance in this. This is not a foregone conclusion.
Graeme Souness

"The challenge for Rangers is to make a fist of it; to turn up and make a game of it, which they didn't last year. Anything can happen in a derby, but Celtic must start as the outstanding favourites. I want Rangers to do themselves justice.

"Celtic are used to playing against better players. They are used to moving the ball quicker. They are used to having a quicker thought-process.

"Both sets of players are used to playing in big atmospheres, so that shouldn't be an issue, but they have better players.

"It's about who has got the best group of players. Who has more people who can finish? Celtic have. Who has got the better defenders? Celtic have.

"So you are saying Celtic should win again, but it's a derby game, it's a cup game and Rangers have a big chance in this. This is not a foregone conclusion for Celtic and they know that."

Souness, who played for and managed Rangers, believes the Old Firm derby is the biggest he has ever been involved in because of the passion of the fans on both sides of the divide.

Former Celtic midfielder Murdo MacLeod believes his former club will be too strong for Rangers

"It isn't just another game," he added. "It's the biggest derby I've ever been involved in. Everton v Liverpool, the Galatasaray one was a big game, but it still doesn't come near this.

"A lot of it is in your own mind because you feed off that passion your supporters have for your football club and you start to absorb that and take it on board.

"You feel guilty when you feel when you haven't done the best for them. That's what these two clubs mean to the supporters. It's greater here than anywhere else, and that is why this is not just another derby."
