England's player ratings against Netherlands: Peter Taylor's verdict

After the euphoria of Saturday's 3-2 win over Germany, England were brought back down to earth with a 2-1 defeat by the Netherlands at Wembley.

Leicester striker Jamie Vardy staked his claim for a starting spot at Euro 2016 with his second goal in as many games to put England in front, but the Netherlands equalised through Vincent Janssen's penalty before substitute Luciano Narsingh netted their winner.

Here are former England caretaker manager Peter Taylor's player ratings...

Fraser Forster - 7/10

He made a couple of saves and he wasn't at fault for the goals, although I did feel that his kicking wasn't as good as I would have liked. He seemed a little bit nervous with pass backs and looked a little bit undecided at times.

Kyle Walker - 7

Walker used his pace and he got forward quite well. He linked up better in the second half than he did in the first half, I thought, although he did get the assist for Vardy's goal.

Chris Smalling - 7

I think he's getting there. Again, he was good but no more than a seven out of 10. I just felt that we didn't pass the ball as well tonight from the back and that made us a little bit nervous in the second half.

John Stones - 7

There was good and bad from Stones. I'd give him a seven because a couple of his passes were outstanding, and in that respect I'd want to see more from him. But of course he was at fault for the penalty because he lost the ball early on in the move. It's very nearly a six but I'll just about give him a seven because of the way he brought the ball out and passed it.

Danny Rose - 8

I thought he was really unlucky with the handball for the penalty and I thought he did well again. He's had two very good games. I thought he was our best attacker in the first half.

Danny Drinkwater - 8

I thought him and Rose were the best players we had. I would say Drinkwater was an eight out of 10, without a doubt. He did the job well in front of the back four. He passed the ball confidently and defended well too.

James Milner - 7

It was a very steady display from James. He always works hard for the team and tonight was no different. He's a great professional and a great team player.

Adam Lallana - 7

Again, he was good. I liked Lallana. It wasn't as good as Saturday but he did some better things than he's done for most of the season. I think he's had a really good couple of games.

Ross Barkley - 7

He played the full 90 minutes but I think Ross can do a bit better than that. He did some good things but didn't do enough consistently to get a higher rating.

Jamie Vardy - 8

He's such a threat if he gets the service. I think at times we could have played him in more. He made some really good runs and I thought he played the front two position really well. He gives us options up there, I like him a lot.

Daniel Sturridge - 6

He was a little quiet. I think he needs more matches but if anything I thought he came short too much against the Netherlands. I want to see him in the opposition's penalty box and I saw him around the halfway line too much for my liking.

Subs:

Harry Kane - 7

Kane turned Daley Blind a couple of times. For the time he was on the pitch, he was decent.

Phil Jagielka - 7

I think the Spanish referee had an absolute nightmare for the Netherlands' second goal, it should have been a foul on Jagielka. I felt for him there and I hope people don't think he made the mistake because he hasn't, it was a foul.

Nathaniel Clyne - 7

He went on to left-back and he was only on for a short time so it's not easy to give him a mark but he didn't do anything wrong.

Theo Walcott - 7

To be fair, I'm not convinced he could have done much more in his time on the pitch. His movement was good to receive a great pass from Stones but his shot was blocked.
