Rangers boss Mark Warburton in the dark over Wigan link

By Peter Gilbert

Rangers manager Mark Warburton says he does not know where reports linking him with the Wigan job came from.

Mark Warburton is "absolutely bemused' by reports linking him with the managerial vacancy at Wigan.

The Rangers boss is reportedly on a Wigan shortlist along with former MK Dons boss Karl Robinson and Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs to replace Gary Caldwell.

However, Warburton, whose side are currently fifth in the Scottish Premiership, nine points adrift of leaders Celtic, is mystified to be linked with the Latics.

"I am absolutely bemused where these reports come from," said Warburton "I am amazed they even make the papers."

Former captain Caldwell led the Latics to the League One title last season but was sacked earlier this week following a dismal start to the season which has left the club 23rd in the Championship table.

Warburton, who signed James Tavernier, Martyn Waghorn and Rob Kiernan from Wigan last season, was said to be highly-rated by the club's chairman David Sharpe.

Alan McInally and Stuart Pearce talk Rangers, Celtic and the future of Moussa Dembele.

However, Warburton denies having a relationship with Sharpe and insists he is committed to Rangers.

"I didn't actually deal with David. I have no relationship there at all," Warburton added. "With all respect to Wigan I have no idea where the rumour has come from.

"I am the manager of Rangers, I would never talk about another club or another job. I am just amazed that it even makes the tabloids."

"I hope very much it is long term [project at Rangers. We spoke about building foundations.

"We look at where the club has been the last four or five years, rightly or wrongly, and the club needs to move forward on strong foundations.

"That is our task and our aim, and working closely with the chairman and the board and everyone involved with the club and if we can do that and put the club on sound footings then we will be in a good place.

"I just don't think we can afford to move too recklessly and try to move too quickly without those strong foundations."
