Garry Monk has emerged as a leading contender for the Leeds head coaching post

We understand former Swansea manager Garry Monk is the front runner to take over from Steve Evans as manager of Leeds United

Sky sources report that Leeds are in talks with Garry Monk about their vacant head coaching position.

Monk has been out of work since he was sacked by Swansea in December while Championship side Leeds parted company with Steve Evans on Tuesday night.

The departure of Evans means Leeds are looking for their seventh manager since Massimo Cellino acquired the club in April 2014.

Having taken charge last October, Evans guided Leeds to 13th in the Championship but Cellino said on Tuesday that "a different approach is required in order to achieve our targets for the new season".

And, having been rebuffed in their efforts to land MK Dons boss Karl Robinson and Bristol Rovers manager Darrell Clarke, Leeds have turned their attention to Monk.

The 37-year-old boss was a long-serving player at Swansea and took over as manager of the club in February 2014.

Having kept the Swans up that season, he then masterminded a fantastic 2015/16 campaign in which they amassed the club's record Premier League points tally and finished eighth in the standings.
