Blackburn Rovers and midfielder Hope Akpan have been charged by the Football Association over their conduct in Tuesday's 2-1 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday.
Akpan pushed referee Scott Duncan after having a late equaliser ruled out for handball, and was subsequently shown a straight red card by the official.
The 25-year-old is set to serve a standard three-match ban following his dismissal, but could have his suspension increased if the FA deems his original punishment insufficient.
Blackburn have also been charged for failing to ensure that its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion.
Winger Elliot Bennett has already received a two-match suspension for using offensive language following the final whistle at Hillsborough.
Blackburn have until 6pm on Tuesday to respond to the charge, while Akpan has until 6pm on Monday.
Vincent Sasso scored twice for Wednesday to seal victory, with Danny Graham on the scoresheet for the visitors.
It leaves Wednesday in sixth place, the final play-off position, while Blackburn sit 23rd, two points off safety.
Owen Coyle's side take a break from league action next when they host Manchester United in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Sunday.
