Liverpool are back on top of the Premier League after a drama-filled victory at Newcastle that leaves no margin for error from Manchester City in the title race.

Divock Origi's headed goal four minutes from time - which may later be awarded as an own goal against Jamal Lascelles - edged out the Magpies at St James' Park.

But a large slice of luck earlier in the game played a major part in their win.

"Atsu's goal could have kept Liverpool in the title race," Jamie Carragher said on Sky Sports after full-time, referring to the Newcastle winger's first-half equaliser which spared Trent Alexander-Arnold what would surely have been a red card for a goal-line handball seconds earlier.

Instead, Atsu's goal to cancel out Virgil Van Dijk's opener proved the best thing that could happen for the league leaders, as they edged to victory with 11 men, but only after they had given up another lead when Salomon Rondon cancelled out Mohamed Salah's goal.

Klopp hails Liverpool stars

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp expressed his relief and pride after his side's victory at St James', just three days after they lost 3-0 at Barcelona to deal a massive blow to their Champions League hopes.

"What the boys did is unbelievable," Klopp said.

"It's brilliant, so deserved, it was a tough game against a physically stronger team than us. We had to fight, I couldn't be more proud."

But victory came at a steep price.

Salah was stretchered off after suffering a head injury and, along with Roberto Firmino, is rated doubtful for the second-leg of Liverpool's Champions League semi-final with Barcelona - who rested all 11 players as the already-crowned La Liga champions were beaten by Celta Vigo on Saturday night.

"I spoke to him after the game," Klopp added. "He got a hip against his head and the doctor has to make a decision.

"It doesn't look really serious to be honest but it was enough for the doc to give us a sign that we had to change and that's what we did. I spoke to him, he looked really okay, but the rest we have to see."

Liverpool's best win?

Liverpool racked up their eighth league win in a row in Newcastle but it was probably their most attritional, and especially in the second half they lacked any of the hallmark fluidity they have produced with such consistency.

Despite that, Sky Sports' Gary Neville thought it was the Reds' best win of the bunch.

"That's the best of Liverpool's eight wins in a row," Neville said. "That is what a title race is; a team is flagging, showing signs of vulnerability, they're losing players, they could have had a man sent off, the crowd is up for it, it's a Saturday night...

"For Liverpool to come through that, they can be proud. They weren't at it, they looked dishevelled, the team was all over the place, there was no shape, they were panicking, it was rash, but they got through it. That's all that matters."

Neither City nor Liverpool have dropped a point in the title race since Liverpool drew at Everton on March 3, and Neville added: "More and more, it's looking like seeing two months of flawless results, with each team winning each game.

"I still can't believe what I'm watching, and this is more what you'd historically see in terms of teams flagging under pressure, but getting through it. I think City will win on Monday and then beat Brighton, I think Liverpool will beat Wolves. There's nothing happening which suggests otherwise."

Title race final act live on Sky Sports

The next instalment of The Run In will be staged on Monday night when City can claim back the lead of the Premier League with victory against Leicester.
