England are targeting early wickets on the final day of the first Test in Antigua, but West Indies still believe they can win pull off a record win.

The tourists will go into day five needing eight wickets for victory after West Indies closed Thursday on 98-2 in pursuit of a 438 target.

That is 20 more than the record fourth-innings run chase in Tests, achieved by West Indies against Australia on the island of Antigua back in 2003.

That was the era of the great Brian Lara, but despite a more modest batting line-up 12 years on coach Phil Simmons insists victory rather than survival remains the target.

"At this stage, we're where we wanted to be, we're still looking to win the game," said Simmons, in his first match in charge. "We're a team who score quickly. With me, it's always a case of looking how you can get the runs before you look at how you can save it.

"It's easy for guys to score out there. It's hard to contain batsmen when it's as easy as that."

For all Simmons' talk, England are 2/5 favourites with Sky Bet, and Thursday's century-maker Gary Ballance is confident they can get the job done.

"We've obviously got a lot of runs on the board and we've still got a lot of overs to bowl at them," he said. "If we can get a few in the first session, then in the second we have the new ball to take, so hopefully we can push on for the win."

Jimmy Anderson, who needs two wickets to beat Ian Botham's England Test record of 383, went wicketless on day four.

"Jimmy's Jimmy," Ballance said. "He's absolutely fine. He's grumpy on the field but in the changing room, he's happy days.

"He's running in same as ever. It'd be great if he could get two wickets but as long as we win the game, he's happy because it's a matter of time before those wickets come."
