Warwickshire chief executive Colin Povey does not believe Jonathan Trott made a mistake by resuming his England career.
The 34-year-old batsman was recalled by England for the tour of the West Indies following an absence of over a year after leaving the 2013-14 Ashes tour with a stress-related illness.
However, he struggled badly with the bat in the Caribbean, managing only 72 runs in his six Test innings, and subsequently announced his retirement from international cricket.
Trott, who had performed well for the England Lions earlier in the winter, is now set to resume playing for Warwickshire, but Povey insists it was the right call to play for England again.
He told Sky Sports News HQ: “You want to test yourself all the time if you are an international sportsman. When you’ve seen the promised land you want to see if you can still cut the mustard at that level.
“So I don’t think anyone can blame him for wanting to have one more throw at it by taking on a challenge overseas again.
“International cricket is a notch above domestic cricket and playing for England is different to playing for the Lions. It’s right at the top of the game.
“At least it (the retirement) is on Jonathan’s terms and he’ll have in his own mind given it one last go.
“But as far as we are concerned he is always welcome at Edgbaston. He is very much part of the furniture and part of the family and I’m sure he’ll be back scoring runs for us soon.”
