Rey Vargas will be joined in his corner by hall-of-fame trainer Ignacio 'Nacho' Beristain for Saturday's WBC super-bantamweight title fight against Gavin McDonnell.

The Mexican is likely to receive a hostile reception when he faces McDonnell for the vacant WBC belt in Hull this weekend, live on Sky Sports.

But Vargas can rely on the calm guidance of Beristain, who has trained the likes of Oscar De La Hoya and Juan Manuel Marquez, and will share corner duties with the fighter's father.

"My father got me into the sport, he was a former boxer and he trains me in camp, but I've had a friendship with 'Don' Nacho for a long time," said Vargas.

"My father guided me throughout my entire amateur career and I wanted 'Don' Nacho to train me as a professional, but I have both of them."

McDonnell has collected British and Commonwealth titles on his route to a world title shot, earning the respect of his big-hitting opponent.

With 22 knockouts in 28 wins, Vargas has demonstrated his knockout power, but admits he might need to adopt a more disciplined approach against McDonnell.

"I know he's strong, he moves his feet well, he runs a bit, he covers up well but for a fight of this level it can come down to experience," said Vargas. "I have power but my advantage can be just to work hard, not necessarily the punching power.

"He's a fighter that moves well but I think sometimes the advantage goes to the more intelligent one, rather than the more powerful one. But I am also intelligent and I move well. I can go toe-to-toe, plus I have power."
