Floyd Mayweather has given up on trying to arrange a showstopping fight against UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor.

'Money', who officially called time on his glittering career in September 2015 with a points win over Andre Berto, was linked earlier this year with a lucrative clash with the UFC star, with Mayweather claiming McGregor was the only name he would ever consider returning for.

McGregor admitted in the summer he would be interested in the crossover bout if the money was right, but the two sides look to have been unable to agree terms.

"I tried to make the fight happen between me and Conor McGregor," Mayweather told FightHype.com. "We weren't able to make the fight happen, so we must move on.

"I feel honored to be the biggest name in MMA and in boxing, and I don't even compete no more."

McGregor said in August he was waiting for Mayweather to come to him with acceptable terms.
