Chris Eubank Jr is hoping to emulate his world champion father - so how closely is he following in his footsteps?

The middleweight prospect is to make his Sky Sports debut on October 24 in Sheffield and has already outlined several different routes to world champion status.

So, with the legendary Eubank Sr - now sporting the name 'English' - having achieved so much during almost 13 years as a professional boxer, we compare Eubank Jr's career prospects and achievements with that of his father and assess their similarities and differences outside the ring.

Debut

A 19-year-old 'English' made his professional debut on October 3, 1985 at the Sands Casino Hotel in Atlantic City against another debutant, Tim Brown of Philadelphia. The pair met at light-middleweight and shared a bruising four rounds, with Eubank awarded a unanimous decision.

Interestingly, Brown would fight only once more in his professional boxing career - he stopped Kevin Fulton in his hometown inside a round 10 months later.

After the success of his father, Eubank Jr's pro debut at the age of 22 was more widely-anticipated, and he duly raced out of the professional traps at Trafford Park, Manchester against Kiril Psonko on November 12, 2011.

Immediately exhibiting a style of movement and shots reminiscent of his father, Eubank Jr systematically broke down the Lithuanian and scored a fourth-round stoppage.

Entrance music

Eubank Sr famously used to enter the ring to Tina Turner's 1989 smash-hit 'Simply The Best' - a decision he claims was made by the wife of his promoter, Barry Hearn. With Eubank Sr's supreme confidence inside the ring mirrored outside it, this seemed the perfect musical statement.

Junior has settled on 'Still D.R.E' by Dr Dre featuring Snoop Dogg - a 1999 hip-hop single from Dre's multi-platinum second studio album, 2001.

Style and character

Along with Prince Naseem Hamed, 'English' is arguably the British boxer whose character has divided opinion most emphatically. A phenomenal boxer and, as he proved beyond all doubt in his first clash with Nigel Benn in November 1990, blessed with an equally impressive chin, some were turned off by a perceived arrogance in his body language and interviews.

By comparison, Eubank Jr has thus far been less forthcoming and stayed out of the headlines. However, with his Matchroom deal signed, exposure on the increase and 'English' by his side, he's already making noises about believing he can beat the very best in both the middleweight and super-middleweight divisions.

Weight

As previously mentioned, 'English' began his career at light-middleweight but in his 10th fight in 1988, he weighed in at 171lbs before beating Steve Aquilina. He returned to the middleweight limit of 160lbs in pursuit of the world title - a dream he achieved in that classic victory over Benn.

In 1991, Eubank fought at super-middleweight for the first time, winning the WBO world title in tragic circumstances as he halted Michael Watson in the final round. The Londoner would spend the next 40 days in a coma. Eubank would remain at the weight until the final two bouts of his career - back-to-back defeats to Carl Thompson at cruiserweight.

Eubank Jr kicked off his career at super-middleweight but has since dropped inside the middleweight limit in five of his fights. He is targeting the likes of Gary 'Spike' O'Sullivan in December and has already outlined plans to take on middleweight kingpin Gennady Golovkin in the future but has also suggested stepping up to face IBF super-middleweight champion James DeGale.

First defeat

Eubank Sr went 43 fights and almost 10 years before he tasted defeat in a professional ring. When it came, it was at the hands of Ireland's Steve Collins, who had claimed in the lead-up to the fight that he was undergoing hypnosis and couldn't be beaten.

In another brutal fight on March 18, 1995, both men were felled. Eubank was down in the eighth following a solid Collins body shot. The champion summoned all he had to deliver a thundering right to knock down the Irishman in the 10th but it was to prove in vain as Collins relieved him of the title with scores of 116-114 115-111 114-113.

Eubank Jr suffered his first reverse in his 19th bout. To this day, he claims he was hard done by the split decision defeat to Billy Joe Saunders, who retained his British, European and Commonwealth middleweight titles with scores of 115-114 113-116 115-113.

The future...

Having responded to defeat to Saunders by halting Dmitry Chudinov - bagging the WBA interim world middleweight title in the process - and signing with Matchroom, Eubank Jr will make his Sky Sports debut on October 24 hoping to kick-start a march to world titles.

With 'English' advising him and guiding his career, only time will tell whether Eubank Jr turns out to be simply the best, simply the next best or simply the next. However the cookie crumbles, entertainment is pretty much guaranteed.
