Ambrose completed successful defences against Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns at Battleground and Dolph Ziggler at SummerSlam but was facing a man in tip-top shape in Styles.
The Phenomenal One edged John Cena in a classic encounter at SummerSlam to become No 1 contender and then beat Ziggler on Smackdown to prevent the title match becoming a Triple Threat.
Elsewhere at Backlash, Randy Orton was looking to bounce back from his SummerSlam defeat to Brock Lesnar when he faced Bray Wyatt, while The Miz defended the Intercontinental Championship against Dolph Ziggler.
There was also a Six-Pack Challenge for the freshly-established Smackdown Women's Title, pitting Nikki Bella against Naomi, Becky Lynch, Carmella, Natalya and Alexa Bliss.
Plus, the first set of Smackdown Tag Team Champions will be decided - Heath Slater and Rhyno had progressed to the final and battled the winner of a match between The Usos and The Hype Bros earlier in the night.
