Australian Open: Britain's Dan Evans dumped out of qualifying in first round

Dan Evans to miss out on Australian Open for first time since 2018 after losing in first round of qualifying; Heather Watson and Harriet Dart advance to second round; first Grand Slam of the year runs from January 12-26 with Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka the defending champions

Dan Evans was dumped out of Australian Open qualifying in the first round as he missed out on the Melbourne Grand Slam for the first time since 2018.

The British No 6 was beaten 6-4 3-6 6-3 by Japan's James Trotter.

In the women's competition, Harriet Dart made it safely through to the second round by defeating Lizette Cabrera 6-2 7-6 (7-5) and will now face Taylah Preston on Tuesday.

Heather Watson also advanced as she overcame Serbia's Lola Radivojevic 7-5 6-7 (14-16) 6-2 to set up a clash with Varvara Lepchenko.

Britain's Katie Boulter, Emma Raducanu, Sonay Kartal, Jodie Burrage, Jack Draper, Cameron Norrie and Jacob Fearnley all have direct entry into the Australian Open main draw.
