Next Gen ATP Finals: Who has qualified, schedule, when to watch on Sky Sports Tennis

Eight young tennis players have qualified for the 20-and-under Next Gen ATP Finals, held from December 18-22 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia - live on Sky Sports Tennis.

The event takes place at King Abdullah Sports City on indoor hard courts, with Arthur Fils, Alex Michelsen, Jakub Mensik, Shang Juncheng, Learner Tien, Luca Van Assche, Nishesh Basavareddy and Joao Fonseca all qualifying this year.

A host of high-profile players have won the tournament, with current world No 1 Jannik Sinner lifting the trophy in 2019, four-time Grand Slam winner Carlos Alcaraz winning it two years later and Stefanos Tsitsipas being crowned champion in 2017.

Highlights of the Japan Open final between Frenchman Arthur Fils and compatriot Ugo Humbert

Tennis' new showman - Fils is one of the rising stars of the game, with the Frenchman qualifying on the back of winning ATP 500 tournaments in Hamburg and Japan this season.

At the age of 20, he is the highest-ranked player in the field - he currently sits at No 20 - and he's coached by two-time French Open champion Sergi Bruguera and Davis Cup winner Sebastien Grosjean.

Alex Michelsen hit this crazy return against Jannik Sinner during their match at the US Open

American youngster Michelsen was a finalist at the Hall of Fame Open and Winston-Salem Open, while he also reached the third round of the Australian Open.

At 6ft 5in, he is currently sitting at a career-high No 41 and has been in the top 50 since August.

Michelsen has put in the hard hours with fitness coach Rodney Harrison, who trained Robby Ginepri - Michelsen's current coach - in time for Jeddah.

Jakub Mensik

Highlights of Andy Murray against Jakub Mensik at the Qatar Open

Czech star Mensik was a finalist at the Qatar Open and also claimed four top-10 wins during the 2024 season - two against Andrey Rublev and two against Grigor Dimitrov.

Mensik also reached the third round of the US Open, while he also beat the likes of Andy Murray and Gael Monfils during a successful 2024, having started the year at No 167 and rising to No 48.

Shang Juncheng

World No 50 Shang became just the second Chinese ATP Tour titlist in history - after Wu Yibing - when he won in Chengdu in September.

The 19-year-old also reached the semi-finals in Hong Kong and Atlanta, and the third round at the Australian Open, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz.

Learner Tien

American Tien will make his debut at the event, having won three ATP Challenger Tour titles in 2024.

The 18-year-old also enjoyed a run to the quarter-finals at the ATP 250 event in Winston-Salem.

Luca Van Assche

Frenchman Van Assche is set to return to Jeddah after advancing to the semi-finals at the event last year before losing to compatriot Fils.

The 20-year-old reached the third round at the Australian Open in January and earned eight tour-level wins in 2024.

Nishesh Basavareddy

American Nishesh Basavareddy is yet to play at a Grand Slam, but he has won two Challenger Tour titles and reached a further two finals at that level since October.

The American, who is at a career-high No 139 raking, won the boys' doubles title at the 2022 US Open alongside Ozan Baris.

The Brazilian has made big strides on the ATP Tour in 2024, improving to a career-high ranking of world No 145 from No 727 at the turn of the year.

Fonesca claimed his first ATP Tour and ATP Masters 1000 wins in 2024, with the latter coming at the Madrid Open. He also claimed wins over the likes of Lorenzo Musetti and Alex Michelsen.

Fonseca caught the tennis world's eye in February by making a run to the semi-finals of the ATP 500 Rio Open.

Format

The competition is played over five days and consists of two round-robin groups, semi-finals and the final.

The format differs from usual ATP competition:

  • Best of five sets
  • First to four games in each set
  • Tie-break at three-all
  • No-Ad scoring
  • Lets on serve
  • Live electronic line-calling
  • Matches start four minutes from the entry of the second player onto the court
  • Shot clock - 25 seconds but reduced to 15 seconds after rallies lasting less than three shots
  • Maximum of one medical timeout per player, per match
  • Coaching of players via headsets
  • Members of the public can move around during play (except at baselines)
  • Players can use wearable technology
