British No 1 Kyle Edmund eased into the Citi Open third round after compatriot Dan Evans suffered an early exit in Washington.

Edmund, who received a bye straight into the second round, needed only 69 minutes to defeat South African Lloyd Harris 6-1 6-4.

The world No 34 outclassed Harris, who won a set against Roger Federer at Wimbledon, and will next face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga after the Frenchman knocked out second seed Karen Khachanov.

Evans, who reached the quarter-finals at the Atlanta Open last week, lost nine of the last 10 games to world No 77 Yoshihito Nishioka from Japan in a 6-4 6-1 first-round defeat.

The 29-year-old broke Nishioka in the second game of the match but the world No 51 then immediately lost his serve, before his opponent consolidated his second break to serve out for the first set.

Nishioka took control with back-to-back breaks of serve early in the second set and a fifth break of serve sealed victory on his third match point after one hour and seven minutes.

Evans will next feature in the Rogers Cup in Montreal, where he will look to qualify for the main draw of the Masters 1000 event.
