Kyle Edmund has called time on his 2018 campaign after a scan showed a small amount of fluid behind his left knee.

The injury is not regarded as serious but Edmund has pulled out of the Paris Masters this week.

It has been a breakthrough year for the 23-year-old who recently captured his first ATP Tour title, when he beat Gael Monfils in the Antwerp final.

That result capped a fine 2018 for Edmund, who is currently No 15 in the ATP World Rankings.

Edmund, whose record is 36-21 for the year, had still been in the race for a place at the ATP Tour Finals in London next month, but needed a good run in the French capital.

Second seed Novak Djokovic's opponent in round two will be Joao Sousa after the Portuguese qualifier beat Italy's Marco Cecchinato 7-5 6-3.

And for fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev and fifth-seeded Marin Cilic it will be Frances Tiafoe and Philipp Kohlschreiber respectively. Tiafoe got past Nicolas Mahut in straight sets, while Kohlschreiber came from behind to triumph against Robin Haase.
