Australian No 1 Nick Kyrgios is set to have surgery on his injured elbow with the French Open just five weeks away.

Kyrgios sustained the injury in Australia's Davis Cup defeat to Germany in February, where he lost to Alexander Zverev in straight sets.

The 22-year-old will miss the next two ATP clay-court tournaments in Estoril and Madrid, while Roland Garros begins on May 27.

"I [have] been unable to play anywhere near the level I need to be to compete at the highest levels," Kyrgios said on Twitter.

"I have now taken the advice of my physio and medical advisers to have a cortisone injection directly into the elbow.

"This means that I will be unable to play in Estroil or Madrid which I am really disappointed about."

"I love playing in Estroil. It's where I made my first tour final and the Portuguese fans are just amazing. I aim to be back in Estroil in 2019."
