Fans booed Nick Kyrgios off court at the Washington Open after he retired injured

Nick Kyrgios was booed off court at the Citi Open in Washington after retiring hurt for a third tournament in a row.

The Australian, who was trailing American Tennys Sandgren 6-3 3-0 in the second round, withdrew because of a shoulder problem.

The 22-year-old has struggled with injuries over recent months, having retired early from Queen's and Wimbledon.

Kyrgios said: "My shoulder kind of just came on today, I hadn't been feeling it. And my hip has been fine.

"I've been very cautious with it, I haven't been training enough, at all, to play a tournament like this. I just wanted to see how it goes, but obviously I'm far from ready.

"I don't think it's really worth playing through here and jeopardising my US Open."

The US Open starts on August 28.
