Aljaz Bedene is out of the German Open in Hamburg after losing to Karen Khachanov on Thursday.
Russia's Khachanov , the world No 32, won 7-6 (7-4) 5-7 6-4 against the British No 3 in the second round of the tournament.
Bedene had seen his world ranking improve to No 46 after a run to the Wimbledon third round and began his Hamburg campaign with a 6-1 6-2 thrashing of Jose Hernandez-Fernandez, but has now bowed out.
Khachanov will now play Argentina's Federico Delbonis in the quarter-finals.
