Rafael Nadal won the Barcelona Open for a 10th time after beating Dominic Thiem in Sunday’s final.
The Spaniard persevered 6-4 6-1 in his home country at a tournament that he has historically dominated.
Nadal, the reigning champion having won his ninth title last year, was the second seed in Barcelona but made short work of Thiem, who had earlier eliminated world No 1 Andy Murray at the semi-final stage.
After a competitive first set, Nadal's mastery of the clay courts took over in the second. From 4-1 up, the 14-time Grand Slam champion dominated a Thiem service game to move within touching distance of the ATP 500 title, which he then delivered on his own serve.
The Barcelona triumph comes a week after Nadal won the Monte Carlo Masters, as the clay court season ramps up towards the French Open.
The Madrid Open is live on Sky Sports from Monday May 8 until Sunday May 14.
