Second seed Angelique Kerber has progressed into the US Open semi-finals after a hard-fought win over Roberta Vinci.

Kerber claimed a 7-5 6-0 victory in Tuesday's quarter-final against Vinci, last year's runner-up at the Grand Slam.

The first set was arduous work for Kerber, this year's Australian Open champion, but she recovered from the brink of defeat and Vinci could not maintain her challenge through the second set.

Vinci, who succumbed to Flavia Pennetta in the 2015 final, earned the first of many breaks against Kerber to go 3-2 up in a topsy-turvy opening set.

Kerber broke back but Vinci earned another break to open a 5-3 advantage - yet she failed to serve out the set, and her German opponent drew level at five apiece.

That appeared to be the beginning of the end for Vinci - Kerber broke her once more, crucially, in the opening set before storming through the second.
