Laura Robson's hopes of playing in next week's US Open are still in tact after she made it through the first round of qualifying.

The 22-year-old Briton, handed a wildcard into the qualifying draw, is languishing at No 247 in the world as she has struggled on her comeback from two rounds of wrist surgery, but progressed past Su Jeong Jang 6-3 6-2.

Robson, who reached the fourth round at Flushing Meadows in 2012, crucially broke in the eighth game of the first set to take a 5-3 lead before serving it out.

Then after squandering an early break in the second, she regained her composure to reel off four successive games and earn a second-round tie against world No 142 Isabella Shinikova.

There was more British success as Tara Moore also made it through to the next round.

The 24-year-old, currently ranked No 171, is hoping to make her maiden appearance at the US Open and is one step nearer after a 6-4 6-3 success over Tereza Mrdeza.
