Caroline Wozniacki's comeback from injury stalled when she was beaten by Anett Kontaveit in the second round of the Nottingham Open.
The former world No 1 took the opening set against her Estonian opponent, but Kontaveit rallied impressively and eventually came through 6-7 6-3 7-5 in a tough encounter.
Wozniacki was making her return to the WTA Tour after 10 weeks out with an ankle injury and she won her first match back on Tuesday when overcoming Turkey's Cagla Buyukakcay in straight sets.
But Kontaveit proved a far tougher opponent, battling back from losing the opening set tie-break to level things thanks to a couple of service breaks.
And the 20-year-old produced a final break in the 12th game of the deciding set to progress to the last-eight, where she will play America's Alison Riske.
"The match was up and down, but she played well, so hats off to her," Wozniacki said.
"At the end of the day, I'm just happy that I'm able to play again. One step in the right direction, and from here I'll just move forward, know what I can work on and hopefully get better. The main thing is that my ankle is holding up, so I'm pleased with that."
Unseeded Riske eased into the quarter-finals with a 6-2 6-4 win over Taiwan's Su-Wei Hsieh.
Top seed Karolina Pliskova was an impressive 6-1 6-3 winner over Anna Tatishvili and fourth seed Monica Puig also made it through with a 6-4 6-0 win over Michelle Larcher de Brito.
British No 1 Johanna Konta will face China's Saisai Zheng in her second round match on Thursday, with Tara Moore taking on eighth seed Christina McHale from the United States.
