The world No 14, who has also been suffering from a hamstring injury, has been in good form on clay this season having reached the final of the Monte Carlo Masters where he lost out to Spain's Rafa Nadal.

Monfils' best performance at Roland Garros came eight years ago when he reached the semi-finals.

His withdrawal comes less than 24 hours after world No 3 and 2009 champion Roger Federer pulled out through injury.
