James Ward failed to reach the French Open in Paris after an opening-round qualifying defeat at Roland Garros.

The British No 5 was beaten 6-4 6-3 by Italy's Matteo Donati to continue what has been a disappointing year for the 29-year-old.

The world No 171 has not won a match on the main ATP Tour since Wimbledon of last year and Tuesday's defeat came at the hands of a player ranked 99 spots below him.

Ward will hope to rediscover his form when he returns to the grass courts of Queen's Club next month to contest the Aegon Championships.

The London-born player, who was a member of Great Britain's Davis Cup-winning squad in 2015, has been handed a wild card for the tournament.

Ward's fellow Briton Brydan Klein also fell at the first hurdle following a 6-3 6-3 defeat against Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky in his first-round qualifier.

Britain will still have seven players in Friday's main draw for the French Open which gets under way on May 23.

Andy Murray, Aljaz Bedene and Kyle Edmund will play in the men's singles at Roland Garros with Johanna Konta, Heather Watson, Naomi Broady and Laura Robson featuring for the women.
