Newcastle made it two wins from two in the Amlin Challenge Cup after a routine 34-3 Pool 2 victory over Petrarca.
However, full-back Greg Goosen had to make an early try-saving tackle on Italian forward Marco Barbini before the Falcons found their form.
Flanker Barbini had broken the Newcastle line at some speed and Goosen had to be at his best to stop him in his tracks before Jamie Helleur got the Falcons on the scoreboard.
They swept through the opposition's defence for the Samoan to cross and Jeremy Manning added the extras.
The Kiwi fly-half then helped himself to a try after quick hands in the back division and nailed the touchline conversion to give the Aviva Premiership's bottom club a 14-0 half-time lead.
Second row Tim Swinson dived over for a try with a pushover from a scrum but unusually Manning missed the extras ahead of Eoghan Hickey kicking the home side's only points.
Replacement Joe Graham soon crashed over to wrap up the bonus point before Swinson snapped up a second try.
