Neither team could claim a top-two finish coming into the match while Treviso had no hope of overhauling Montpellier for third place, but the Italian side did at least have the goal of trying to pick up a first win of the campaign.
However, they were unable to do that as Montpellier ran in four unanswered tries at Stade Yves-du-Manoir to claim the double over their Italian opponents, who they beat 27-10 away from home in week one.
Unconverted tries from Rene Ranger and Mamuka Gorgodze gave Montpellier a 10-0 half-time lead before Treviso threatened a second-half comeback with two Tobias Botes penalties bringing them back to within four points.
But that was as close as they would come and a Lucas Dupont try just after the hour, converted by Eric Escande, put Montpellier 17-6 to the good.
Both sides then lost men to the sin-bin in the final 10 minutes, Lorenzo Cittadini seeing yellow for the visitors and Charles Geli following him off the pitch for the hosts soon after, before Pierre Berard completed the win with a last-gasp try that Escande again converted.
