Montauban held off a spirited second-half fightback from Racing Metro to prevail 45-31 at Sapiac on Saturday.
The win was a much-needed shot in the arm for the home side, who have now given themselves an improved chance of avoiding the drop.
Racing arrived hoping for points that would do their play-off hopes a power of good, but ended up falling as the partisan crowd got their wish.
The Parisians have now joined Toulon, Biarritz, Clermont and Perpignan in leaving Sapiac with their tails between their legs, not bad for a team languishing in near the basement.
Montauban scored three tries, all of which Cedric Rosalen converted. The fly-half also slotted over six penalties for the home side.
Racing replied with scores from centre Julien Saubade and winger Sireli Bobo, while former All Black Andrew Mehrtens kicked two conversions, three penalties and a drop goal in a losing cause.
