Iain Thornley and Anthony Gelling added a brace apiece while Darrell Goulding and Liam Farrell also scored and Matty Smith kicked four goals, as the hosts went back to the top of Super League.
The Wildcats responded through four different try-scorers in Vince Mellars, Richard Mathers, Lee Smith and Paul Aiton while Paul Sykes booted four goals, but Shaun Wane's side were always the dominant force.
Wigan, who romped to a record 84-6 success against Hull KR on Easter Monday, raced into a 10-0 lead with Thornley and Gelling crossing the whitewash.
And things went from bad to worse for the Wildcats as prop forward Justin Poore was shown a red card for throwing a punch at Farrell.
However, they responded well as Mellars and Mathers crossed over in the space of two minutes to give Wakefield a shock 12-10 lead.
But it didn't last for long as Thornley managed to cross for his second try before further scores from Tomkins, Goulding and Farrell saw the Warriors lead 30-12 at the break.
Further scores in the second half for Gelling and Tomkins put the Warriors further ahead, but Wakefield refused to lie down and they showed their fighting spirit as tries from Smith and Aiton kept the score respectable.
Wigan had the final say though as Tomkins raced 80 metres to bag his hat-trick with time running out.
